Vancouver Shomonkai was founded by direct students of Morito Suganuma Shihan (Aikikai 8th Dan) in 2001 and is directly affiliated with Aikido Shoheijuku. Masaru Kiyota (Aikido Shohei Juku, Aikikai 3rd Dan) is the dojo's Chief Instructor.

The name SHOMONKAI consists of three characters:

   SHO: Shohei Juku
   MON: School or Students
   KAI: Organization or Society

That is, Shomonkai literally means "Shohei Juku School Society".

The dojo is a non-profit society incorporated in the Province of British Columbia, Canada.
